The railway is of great benefit. Management of railway transport is carried out by a locomotive brigade. The profession of a machinist is included in the list of difficult jobs with harmful and difficult working conditions. It is physically impossible to fulfill all the responsibilities assigned to him on his own. The work of the driver requires a constant concentration of attention and the simultaneous execution of several technical operations. Therefore, an assistant to the driver is given to help him. Moscow is a large metropolis with a large railway interchange, the number of locomotive brigades is growing here every year, and each of them has such an assistant.

Functional responsibilities

The assistant driver must:

  • correctly and timely to fulfill all the instructions of the driver for maintenance and care of the composition;
  • monitor the status of the served train;
  • fix the locomotive from spontaneous movement;
  • in the absence of actions on the part of the driver to prevent emergencies, independently take measures to stop the train, not allowing the red semaphore signal to pass through;
  • if the driver is unable to control the train, take measures to stop the train, secure it in the generally established manner from spontaneous departure and inform the dispatcher on duty about the incident by radio.

Hiring Requirements

As already mentioned, managing mobile devices is very hard work. When hiring a driver, the assistant driver is selected and must meet certain criteria. Firstly, in order to carry out activities such as servicing locomotive devices and managing the train, it must be “on a short foot” with equipment, be guided by the rules of the railway transport and know the safety rules. Secondly, the assistant driver should be attentive, have good eyesight and an immediate reaction. In addition, it is important for a candidate for the position to have excellent coordination of movements, physical endurance and emotional and psychological stability. During employment, it is necessary to undergo a professional medical examination and only with a positive medical opinion can an employee begin his immediate duties. Such a profession is contraindicated for people with disabilities and with respiratory diseases.

Risks and costs of the profession

Work on the railway transport has its advantages, for example, the salary of employees is above average. But this is an unsafe activity. In addition to the possibility of collisions and the departure of the train, there are other, no less dangerous situations. The downside in the profession is irregular working hours. The assistant to the driver works 36 hours a week, in conditions of constant hum, tension and pitching. Sometimes he has to rest between shifts in a locomotive depot, in special rest rooms. Improper nutrition often leads to stomach ulcers, gastritis and other diseases. As a result of constant stress and fatigue, a stressful state can occur.
