Belonging to the "cell of society" for each of us is one of the most important areas of life. We get married, get divorced, give birth to children, bring up strangers … Therefore, marital status in a visa application form or when applying for a job gives a potential boss or consul a lot of information and … helps to predict our behavior. Of course, far from always what others think of us coincides with reality. Nevertheless, the column "marital status" in the questionnaire during employment exists, although it has passed the Soviet era, when relatives and friends of "enemies of the people" automatically also were thrown "overboard" of society.

Why do our employers or consuls of foreign countries need to know with whom we fall asleep and wake up, have dinner and lunch, spend weekends and holidays? It would seem that marital status in the questionnaire should be a pure formality. By the way, I would like to warn the reader against "innocent deception." Even for the sake of such a “formality” one should not be tempted or embellished. You do not need to write that you are single if you are in a civil marriage or that "there are no children" if you simply do not live in the same apartment with them. The truth will come to the surface pretty quickly, and even an innocent little lie will be perceived not in your favor. If you were deceived in such a question, then how can you believe in future matters that are more serious for the enterprise?

The marital status in the questionnaire is often interpreted by the personnel department and direct management in terms of your usefulness to the company. What logic do they follow? For example, it is believed that for men the status of a bachelor is a kind of signal of insecurity. Why? Because he has little to keep in this city, he can disappear with companies or walk until you drop. If he does not care about anyone, then he is more indifferent to earnings. A completely different matter is the young father of the family. In the eyes of the employer, this is a responsible person who must support a family. Consequently, the level of earnings is extremely important for him, and he will give all his best "in full", which will also have a beneficial effect on the success of the company. But young mothers or women who have just married, on the contrary, immediately lose a few points for a cadre worker or potential boss. After all, such an employee can quickly go on maternity leave, she will have to pay benefits, save a place for her. And if there are already small children, they can often get sick, as a result, mother will spend half of her working time on sick leave. If a person in the column "marital status" in the resume indicates that he is divorced, problems may arise with the payment of alimony. In addition, the question immediately arises of how reliable it is. A widower, on the contrary, can be perceived as a person who has experienced a serious psychological trauma, prone to depression. And such moments will necessarily be taken into account by the employer.

Visa profiles also often require marital status. “Single” for a young woman who wants to go abroad, in the interpretation of the consulate most often means “potential bride, immigrant” … Especially if a lady travels by private invitation of a male person, this may even be a reason for refusing a visa. In the best case, they will be obliged to obtain a "permission for the bride."

Nevertheless, when filling out the columns "marital status" in the questionnaire, we strongly recommend writing the truth. It is better to dispel the doubts of the bosses and show themselves on the positive side than to justify oneself and blush for "innocent deception."
