From ancient times, what a person earns a living for has been considered a part of his world, an important element of his status, position in society. Occupation determines the inner world of the individual. Is it possible to say unequivocally what is the most respected profession? Much depends on the state of society, on the leading ideology. From how much education is valued and respected.
For example, what was the most respected profession in the USSR?
Engineer, doctor, teacher … The intelligentsia, especially the scientific and technical, although it did not earn much, but enjoyed authority. In our time, priorities have changed, and few sincerely and purposefully go to a pedagogical or technical university. In Europe it was a little different. Lawyer, notary, entrepreneur - the most respected profession in a post-bourgeois society made it possible, first of all, to earn good money. Now, alas, we are also very different from Europe and the USA, where it is prestigious to be a scientific or medical professional. Where doctors are engaged in private practice, and in budgetary hospitals you can earn, if not very much, then enough for a normal life.
What is the most respected profession for Russians these days?
What does youth want to become? With the development of capitalism, entrepreneurial qualities and occupation, which allows you to open your own business, have become increasingly appreciated. At the same time, education is no longer so important as acumen, ingenuity, forward-thinking, negotiation skills. But universities do not teach this. According to the statistics of admissions and competitions to universities and institutes, it is difficult to say unequivocally which profession is most in demand. You can turn to the European experience. For example, in Germany, Great Britain, Denmark highly skilled programmers are required. Therefore, the most respected profession from this point of view is associated with information technology. Doctors and nurses are also in demand. In Russia, nurses or nurses earn several times less than their counterparts in Europe. The situation is similar with scientists. On the one hand, the cult of knowledge and education has always been strong in Russia.
But on the other hand, young people, considering what professions are and what they can do in the future, take into account the prospects of earning. And they are insignificant for scientific personnel in Russia. Even professors and department heads can hardly provide for their families.
What are the characteristics of the most respected profession in order to be considered such? First of all, by status. That is, a person engaged in a certain type of activity is often perceived and evaluated through the prism of his profession. In Russian society, for example, jurisprudence is still considered prestigious. Secondly, social guarantees and earning opportunities are extremely important. And here, too, one can observe certain shifts. For example, if before the military or FSB officers were provided financially thanks to all sorts of benefits, rather than high salaries, now the situation has changed. But the profession of "businessman", which in Soviet times was considered something almost indecent and certainly not completely legal, today returns its status. People have ceased to hope for state support and are increasingly counting on themselves and their strengths.
